Abstract

This study investigated the importance of the book Leg on Leg, or in Arabic Al Saq Ala Al Saq written by Ahmad Fares Al Shudiaq in modern literature, in addition to classifying the book and its literary genres according to the standards and specifications of modern critical theories of literary genres.

This study consists of three chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. In the introduction, the researcher discussed the role of Al Shudiaq in the Arab literary renaissance and his status amongst the literary figures of his age. The introduction also includes the rationale of selecting the subject, restricting it on the book Leg on Leg, the study's methodology and contents, and the most important previous studies.

The first chapter is entitles "Ahmad Fares Al Shudiaq, Pioneer of Modern Literary Renaissance and Development of Literary Genres".The researcher discusses the family of Al Shudiaq, his early life, his stages of life after leaving Lebanon, main events that affected him, and his most important writings. More concentration is given to the book Leg on Leg since it is the focus of the study. I also introduced the concept of literary genre and its development by the passage of time, in addition to highlighting the literary genres that came into eminence during the nineteenth century as a result of influences by the western literature.

In the second chapter, I discussed in details the ancient literary genres in his writings and their artistic structure including poetry, oratory, letters, maqamat, travel literature, and Al Shudiaq's style characteristics in them.

In the third chapter, I discussed the modern literary genres in his book, its artistic structure, and style characteristics: autobiography, narration, drama, articles, and translation.

In the conclusion, the researcher sited the most important findings of the study. In his book Leg on Leg, Al Shudiaq attempted to make renovations in both style and topics. To do so, he joined between both the ancient and modern literary genres. Consequently, his book was considered one of the innovative literary works in the nineteenth century that were difficult to classify. It was a fertile field of interrelating literary genres since it could be classified under various categories, either as autobiography narration or narrated autobiography. In this way, it represented the second phase of literary genres theory development, which is the descriptive phase that was not interested in value judgment but it assumed the probability of mixing and interrelation of literary genres. Pure literary genre is rarely explicit.
